Öjberget

Öjberget in Sundom is a unique mountainous area on the flat Ostrobothnian coast. The mountain lies next to the Söderfjärden meteorite crater and is part of the craters ancient border.

On the mountains enchanting rocky grounds, centuries-old dwarf pines grow. Over time many legends have developled around the mountain, such as the Öjberget trolls and the Mountain King.

Since the 1930s, Öjberget has been an important location for skiing sports. During the first decades, big "Öjberget games" were held, featuring ski races and ski jumping. From the 1960s onward, downhill skiing has been the main sport, alongside cross-country skiing.

Today, Öjberget serves as Vasa City's recreational area with ski trails, fitness trails in varied terrain, and a captivating nature trail with diverse biotopes.

There are illuminated ski trails of different lenghts: 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 km.

The highest natural peak lies at +50m above sea level, which is the highest point in the village of Sundom. The downhill ski slope has a summit elevation of +55 metres above sea level. From a lookout tower (+65 metres above sea level) at the top of the skiing slope, you can see for miles around: Söderfjärden, the village of Sundom, the archipelago and the city of Vaasa. Large information boards at the ski stadium and by the road Markvägen provide basic facts about Öjberget and Söderfjärden.

In addition to rocky grounds and dramatic rock formations, the Öjberget Nature Trail features several unique attractions:
