The Södersund Windmill is located on the north-north-western (NNW) edge of
Söderfjärden.
The address of the windmill is Arholmsvägen 17 in Sundom. From the
Meteoria area you can catch a glimpse of the windmill through the trees to the NNW,
2 km away. At the Meteoria there is a miniature model of the Södersund Windmill.
The windmill was built in the early 19th century. At that time, large parts of Söderfjärden were still covered by water. The year 1809 is carved into a grain hopper inside the windmill – this is considered to be the year that the windmill was built. The model for Södersund’s mill is clearly of Dutch in origin – unique in Finland. The mill was used for grinding and making wood shingles for around a hundred
years.
It was taken out of service and the sails fell off in the 1910s. In 1991 the current owner, the Sundom Village Association, mounted new sails. In 2014 a storm tore down the mill’s sails and in 2016 the sail shaft and sails were replaced.
The Meteoria is managed by the Meteoria section of the Sundom Village Association in collaboration with the Vasa Andromeda Astronomical Association.
